The 72nd session in the “Bukhara Tuesday Evenings” series is devoted to a critical discussion of Intellectualism, Subjectivity, and Individuality: Discourses of Intellectualism in Iran (1979–2021) by Majid Sarvand. The event will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, at Shahr-e Ketab Niavaran. Ardeshir Mansouri, Malek Shojaei Jashouqani, Majid Sarvand, and Ali Dehbashi will speak at the session.
Taking a distinctive approach to the history of Iranian political thought, the book examines intellectualism not merely as an intellectual movement or a form of social action, but as an effort to realize subjectivity, develop individuality, and achieve emancipation from various forms of domination. By distinguishing the conventional understanding of politics from the concept of “the political,” the author explores the role of lifestyle choices, autonomy, criticism of dominant authorities, and the re-creation of identity in the contemporary world.
The book analyzes major post-revolutionary Iranian intellectual discourses, from religious and spiritual intellectualism to identity-oriented and secular approaches, through the ideas of Mehdi Bazargan, Mohammad Mojtahed Shabestari, Abdolkarim Soroush, Mostafa Malekian, Dariush Shayegan, and Aramesh Doostdar. It traces a shift in the focus of intellectual change from political revolution to cultural reform, from the state to society, and from structures of power to the individual, autonomy, and self-actualization.
The event is intended for researchers and students of philosophy, political science, sociology, and cultural studies, as well as anyone interested in contemporary Iranian intellectual history. It offers an opportunity to discuss changing conceptions of intellectualism and their relationship to individual freedom, identity, and power.
