Lecture Notes on the Philosophical Foundations of Equitable Health by Akbar Shahriyari
Equitable distribution of health under resource constraints is a fundamental challenge in policymaking. The lecture notes for Philosophical Foundations of Equitable Health, taught by Akbar Shahrivari, examine theories of justice and offer strategies for Iran's health sector.
Our conception of health as one of the basic goods of every citizen turns it into a vital category in policymaking. Limited resources in this domain make the distribution/redistribution of health among citizens a challenge for health policymakers. From the perspective of John Rawls, justice is the highest virtue of any social institution; likewise, in modern medical ethics, justice, alongside autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence, is considered a fundamental principle.
These issues necessitate deeper reflection on equitable health and an exploration of philosophical theories to find suitable solutions for overcoming the current problems in the field of health and treatment. This lecture series, taught by Dr. Akbar Shahriyari, Professional Ethics Advisor to the President of Iran University of Medical Sciences, is held with this aim. In the initial sessions, existing theories of justice will be examined, and subsequently, using these theories, an approach to the existing issues in Iran's health policymaking will be presented.
