Before any epistemological inquiry, one must understand the psychological nature of religious experience. Hossein Dabbagh does not consider religious experience to be a kind of 'belief,' but rather an independent mental state akin to aesthetic appreciation—one that occurs involuntarily and explains religious beliefs, rather than making them true.
