An Evening for “The Qanats of Tehran”

The 973rd program in the Bukhara Nights series, titled An Evening for “The Qanats of Tehran,” is dedicated to examining one of the most important yet least recognized parts of the capital’s historical and infrastructural heritage.

For thousands of years, qanats have enabled life and the formation of settlements in the arid regions of Iran’s central plateau, giving rise to a civilization based on the intelligent exploitation of water resources. Tehran has also long possessed an extensive network of qanats, their number estimated at over 500 strands; a heritage that, despite its significant role in the city’s history, remains unknown to many of Tehran’s residents today.

In this gathering, Mona Massoudi Ashtiani, Fatemeh Khodadadi Agh-Qaleh, Ali-Asghar Semsar Yazdi, Ahmad Maleki, Reza Shirazian, Mohammad Hassanli, Ali Dehbashi, and Mania Shafahi will deliver lectures. Additionally, the latest issue of the Senowbar Quarterly, which has specifically addressed the subject of qanats in Iran, will be unveiled at this event.

This gathering is an opportunity for those interested in the history of Tehran, cultural heritage, architecture, urban studies, and the history of water and qanats in Iran to become more familiar with a less visible layer of the capital’s past. The program will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Niavaran Book City, No. 135 and 137, Bahonar Street, opposite North Kamraniyeh.
