Mysticism and Sufism have undergone many vicissitudes in post-Islamic Iranian history, yet a robust culture endures. This conversation with Dr. Soroush Dabbagh seeks a sound historical understanding of this current and how to draw upon this spiritual reservoir.

In the history of Iran, especially after Islam, alongside the formation and growth of jurisprudence and philosophy, a current emerged that became known as the mystical and Sufi tradition. This current has experienced many ups and downs throughout its existence, and many of the great figures of this religious tradition were imprisoned or killed on charges of heresy or apostasy. Yet, despite all the hardships and adversities, what has reached us is a robust and rich culture that has come down to us under the name of the mystical and Sufi tradition, and what profound effects it has had, even on our disposition and character. However, what comes to mind and raises the question is: how can we draw upon this rich culture and tradition, considering the coordinates of our time? This conversation seeks, above all, to attain a correct and historical understanding of this intellectual and cultural current, and subsequently, how to benefit from this spiritual reserve.
