Harry Frankfurt

Harry Gordon Frankfurt was an American philosopher who taught at Rockefeller, Yale, and Princeton universities. His main areas of work were moral philosophy, philosophy of mind, and the metaphysics of free will.

By proposing "Frankfurt cases," he argued that moral responsibility does not necessarily depend on the possibility of doing otherwise. He also introduced the concept of "second-order volitions" to explain freedom of the will.

His public renown largely stems from the short and influential essay "On Bullshit," in which he distinguishes between lying and bullshit, arguing that bullshit (indifference to truth) is more dangerous than lying.
