Majid Makhdoum Farkhondeh is an Iranian professor and researcher in the fields of environmental planning, land-use planning, and environmental impact assessment. He is considered one of the pioneering figures in environmental education and scientific institution-building in Iran and is a professor at the University of Tehran. His works and activities have played a significant role in shaping the knowledge of environmental assessment and environmental planning in Iran.
Majid Makhdoum Farkhondeh was born in 1945 in Rasht. He received his Master's degree in Forest and Range Engineering from the University of Tehran, a Master's in Land-Use Planning from the Australian National University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Impact Assessment and Carrying Capacity from Macquarie University in Sydney.
After returning to Iran, Makhdoum joined the faculty of the University of Tehran and engaged in teaching, research, and scientific planning in the Faculty of Natural Resources and the field of environment. He played an effective role in establishing and developing programs in environment, environmental planning, and development impact assessment at the University of Tehran.
His main areas of work include land-use planning, ecological capability assessment, environmental impact assessment, environmental planning, natural resource management, and the use of GIS in environmental studies. Among his well-known works are "The Foundation of Land-Use Planning" and books on environmental assessment and planning.
The significance of Majid Makhdoum's work lies in linking environmental knowledge with development planning. He has endeavored to show that development without regard for the ecological carrying capacity of the land, impact assessment, and scientific management of natural resources leads to environmental degradation and social and economic instability.
