Soroush Dabbagh: Revisiting the intellectual heritage of contemporary Iranian intellectuals has been one of my serious preoccupations over the past decade. In this regard, last year, the course “The Intellectual Heritage of Shariati and Iranian Intellectualism” was held. In the upcoming sessions, I intend to undertake a re-examination of the intellectual-political record of Abdolkarim Soroush (the Soroush Studies lecture series); after the completion of this course, the works of Dariush Shayegan will be discussed. Without a doubt, Abdolkarim Soroush is one of the most important Iranian intellectuals and thinkers after the 1979 Revolution. In this course, with attention to Soroush’s theological, philosophical, mystical, and political works over the past thirty-six years—beginning with the publication of the book “A Critique and Introduction to Dialectical Contradiction” in 1977 and continuing up to the articles “Muhammad (PBUH): Narrator of Prophetic Dreams” in 2013—the record of this controversial contemporary intellectual will be examined. The book “Rite in the Mirror: A Review of the Theological Views of Abdolkarim Soroush” is the main text for the first ten sessions of this course. In addition, certain books, articles, and lectures by Abdolkarim Soroush will structure the discussions of the subsequent seven sessions. In each session, two explanatory and critical sources, in the form of an article or book, will also be introduced so that Soroush can be evaluated from the perspective of his critics and opponents as well.
