Mostafa Malekian’s Advice on Learning English and the Art of Translation

Learning a foreign language, especially English, has always been and remains one of the preoccupations of us Iranians. The large number of private language schools attests to this. This concern, and mastering this tool, is an undeniable necessity for students and truth-seekers who wish to benefit from primary sources in their fields of interest, particularly philosophy. Professor Malekian himself has been proficient in English and Arabic for many years, and from the very first years after leaving the university and entering the seminary, he began teaching English. Throughout his years of teaching, he has always been faced with the question: How should one learn a language? Here, we have extracted some of his recommendations from his translation workshop and the art of translation classes and present them to lovers of truth. These recommendations are organized into four sections: the first section presents a general point about language learning, and the second section outlines his suggested method for understanding texts and the conditions for its implementation. The third section is dedicated to the advantages of this method, and the final section is devoted to several points that translators should keep in mind to deliver a good translation.

A final point: although the language in question in this text is assumed to be English, it seems this method can also be implemented for other languages.
