In the 'Time for Self-Knowledge' series, Dr. Azarakhsh Mokri discusses personal growth, arguing that the importance of self-confidence is an exaggerated and misleading concept; he suggests that focusing on perfectionism and social anxiety may be a better alternative.

I hope that from now on, with the support of the student affairs departments of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Tehran, I can be at the service of those interested via live broadcast on the last Wednesday of every month. This will be a series of sessions on empowerment and personal growth, during which I will address some practical and applied topics in self-knowledge. The titles assigned to each session are derived from common questions and suggestions from university students. I will try to discuss these topics and answer specific questions about each one to the best of my ability, relying on and citing scientific findings. The first session is dedicated to the subject of confidence, or as some say, self-esteem. Complaints about a lack of self-confidence and, so to speak, not believing in oneself are among the most common issues. Many believe that what has hindered their progress in life stems from this very problem. But is this really the case?
Several decades of research and debate have shown that the proposed importance of self-esteem/confidence has been exaggerated and even misleading, and this concept, for reasons I will mention—including extensive psychological marketing—has found a special place in the mental health discourse of many industrialized, and especially Western, countries. An excessive preoccupation with it and efforts to increase it, even by resorting to methods of creating a false self for the sake of success, have not been effective and, on the contrary, have caused complications for many. One might even say that seekers of happiness and well-being have become entangled in a confusing and fruitless knot precisely because of this emphasis on improving self-confidence. In this session's talk, I will point out that addressing and focusing on concepts such as problematic perfectionism, social anxiety, hypersensitivity to rejection, and narcissism might be better alternatives to preoccupation with the self and its status. I hope this topic will be of interest to you.
