Call for Applications: PhD in Analytic Philosophy, 2016–2017 Academic Year

The Analytic Philosophy Research Group at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) will admit PhD students in Analytic Philosophy for the 2016–2017 academic year, starting in Mehr 1395 (September 2016), from among qualified applicants (students who have taken the written exam of the National Organization for Educational Testing (Sanjesh) in the field of Philosophy and are permitted to select a discipline, and students covered by the Exceptional Talents regulations). Interested individuals may send the required documents by no later than 20 Ordibehesht 1395 (9 May 2016) with the subject line “PhD Exam” to [email protected].

Note: Students who have been permitted to select a discipline but have not chosen any discipline-location code, as well as students who have selected the maximum number of discipline-location codes, may also register for the Analytic Philosophy Research Group exam. Given that the Analytic Philosophy discipline code is not listed in booklet number two, the Analytic Philosophy Research Group will directly announce the names of admitted candidates to the Sanjesh Organization.

Other student admission criteria shall be in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Science and the Sanjesh Organization.

A- Documents Required for Registration

The following documents must be sent as PDF files, totaling less than 4 MB.

1. The completed registration application form (the form is attached),

2. A copy of the National ID Card and the first page of the birth certificate,

3. A copy of the most recent academic degree,

4. Copies of university transcripts (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD),

5. An abstract of the Master’s thesis and related research articles,

6. The applicant’s CV, which should include the following:

- Academic honors,

- Research interests,

- Core courses completed,

- Bibliographic information for authored and translated articles and books,

- Participation in domestic and international seminars and conferences,

- Proficiency in foreign languages (submission of any document demonstrating the applicant’s command of the relevant language),

- Introduction of two faculty members who are familiar with the individual’s scholarly activities.

Furthermore, the registration fee is 300,000 Rials, which will be collected at the time of exam card distribution.

B- Exam Dates

The written exam will be held on Friday, 7 Khordad 1395 (27 May 2016) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (located at: Niavaran Street, south side of Niavaran Square). Exam admission cards will be distributed from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM on the same day.

After the written exam, students who have achieved the minimum qualifying score will be invited to participate in an interview. The interview dates will be Monday, 10 Khordad (30 May) and Tuesday, 11 Khordad (31 May).

Note: In the event of any changes to the exam dates, the changes will be announced.

C- Writing Sample

In addition to the documents required for registration, applicants holding a Master’s or PhD degree must submit one chapter of their thesis or one authored article (whether published or unpublished) by the date of the written exam (7/3/1395 or 27/5/2016) to [email protected] (with the subject line “Writing Sample”). It is also recommended that applicants who have not yet defended their Master’s thesis submit a writing sample (a chapter of the thesis or an authored article, whether published or unpublished, short or long) by the date of the written exam.

Final admission from among students who have achieved the required score on the written exam will be based on the interview and the writing sample (if submitted).
