Introduction to this lecture:

The subject of my talk is whether death, in Rumi's thought, is an ender or a giver of value. Of course, when it is asked whether "death is an ender or a giver of value," both the terms ender and giver of value must be added to life; in that case, the meaning will be: does death end life or give value to life? That is, does death bring human life to an end or give it value? It can be said that all conceptions of death that have existed throughout history are reducible to these two conceptions, and all can be referred back to and analyzed through these two conceptions.

· Two Major Viewpoints on Death Throughout History

First Viewpoint: Death as the Ender of Life

One conception is that death does nothing but end life and is the period at the end of the sentence of our life. Therefore, the presence of death means the absence of life.

Second Viewpoint: Death as the Giver of Value to Life

Opposed to this view is a second perspective, in which death is what gives life its value, and without it life would have no worth. The reason we cherish life so much and deem it a precious opportunity is solely because of the presence of death. In other words, the value of life stems from its limitation and finitude, a finitude that is expressed as death.
