Analyses of Iran's situation, though plentiful, are often of little use: the dominance of a coercive force over the causal web makes explanation easy, but renders identifying other factors and offering a comprehensive analysis far more difficult.

Perhaps the situation of no country in the world is analyzed as much as the situation of Iran. I doubt there is another country where, for several decades, almost all the people have spent a significant portion of their free and unfree time analyzing the structure of power, its motivations, causes, and consequences, and examining the resulting economic and cultural issues and problems. Why is analyzing Iran's issues so easy that almost everyone engages in it, and, of course, speaks with such certainty? At the same time, it is unlikely that one can hear anything noteworthy on the matter, even from experts. Why is it that if one spends years reading and listening to these analyses, it is as if nothing has happened; we do not feel that anything, or much of anything, has been added to us? And of course, it makes little difference whether the analysis is economic, cultural, foreign relations, or domestic politics. In a lecture I gave last year at the University of Tehran, I explained that the analysis and explanation of issues, from scientific and technical to political and social, is often difficult because multiple factors are at work in the production of an object or a situation, and it is generally difficult for the researcher to identify and calculate all the components of the causal network, the specific contribution of each, the interaction among the components, and their final effect on the resultant vector, that is, the realization of the final situation. This is the main reason for the difficulty and also the disagreement in describing, explaining, and analyzing events and issues; but there is an exception to this. If, among the network of causal factors that work to bring about something or a situation, there is one factor that plays a very important role...

In other words, if there is a factor that is much more forceful compared to other factors (or, in a sense, its "variable coefficient" is very high), then both analysis and explanation become relatively easy, and there is less disagreement about it. If we are asked why the Earth and other planets of the solar system move in their orbits, without hesitation or reflection we say because of the gravity the Sun exerts on them. Why is this answer so simple and definitive? Do other factors not exert forces on the planets' rotation? The answer is clearly yes. The rotation of a planet like Earth in its orbit is the resultant of numerous small and large factors, and the planet's final motion is their resultant. Each and every planet, and even their moons and satellites, exert conflicting forces on one another, and each planet itself exhibits a specific resistance to any force; at the same time, the planets move so regularly in their orbits that little effect of this struggle is seen; as we all know, the reason is that the force exerted by the Sun is so significant compared to other forces that it renders them negligible in its presence.
