Lectures on Saadi's Bustan by Abdolkarim Soroush
In a series of lectures at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California, Abdolkarim Soroush expounds on ten chapters of Saadi's Bustan. Across twenty sessions, he examines themes such as justice, benevolence, love, humility, and repentance in Saadi's thought.

In the first session, Saadi's life and times, his experiences and travels, and his writing style were discussed. In this session, Dr. Soroush, while presenting some general points about Saadi, delves into the opening verses of the Bustan, which are in praise of God, the Prophet, and religious figures.

The fourth session of the Bustan commentary coincided with the passing of the late Fereshteh Bazargan (daughter of the late Engineer Mehdi Bazargan), who was laid to rest a few days before this session at the Los Gatos Cemetery in San Jose. At the outset, Dr. Soroush gave a brief introduction about Engineer Mehdi Bazargan and the late scholar's cultured family, stating that the late Bazargan and his family were like the thornless flower that Saadi describes in his portrayal of humanity, and he also recited this verse: 'Saadi, a man of good name never dies / Dead is he whose name is not spoken with goodness.' Subsequently, Mr. Soroush briefly recapped the previous session on Saadi's Bustan, which discussed its first chapter, titled 'On Justice, Prudence, and Judgment,' and then proceeded to analyze and expound upon other tales by Saadi from this chapter.

In the fifth session of the lecture series on Saadi's Bustan, Dr. Soroush first recites a ghazal by Saadi in anticipation of the approaching spring of 2017, then expounds upon a remaining story from the first chapter, and subsequently delves into the second chapter of Saadi's Bustan, titled 'On Beneficence,' and its exquisite tales.

In the seventh session of the commentary on the Bustan, Dr. Abdolkarim Soroush reaches the third chapter of Saadi's Bustan, which speaks of "Love, Passion, and Intoxication." While referring to Saadi's view on love in the ghazals and his other books, he considers Saadi's amorous poetry to be unparalleled. According to Dr. Soroush, Saadi's love ghazals are about earthly love, and accordingly, the narratives and tales of his Bustan are also of this nature, especially since Saadi composed the Bustan at the age of fifty; he composed the ghazals in old age, and during the period of composing the Bustan, Saadi possessed greater youthful capacities.
