Mojtahed Shabestari defined hermeneutics as the nature of understanding, which, unlike traditional exegesis, begins with the mind and its pre-understandings. Drawing on Kant and Schleiermacher, he viewed understanding as an unfinished dialogue with the text and considered Islamic culture the product of a dialogue with the modern sciences.
