Life and Thought
Ali Mirsepassi is a sociologist, social theorist, and professor of sociology and Middle Eastern studies at the Gallatin School of New York University.
He also directs the Iranian Studies Center at New York University. Mirsepassi has previously taught and conducted research at institutions such as Carnegie, Hampshire, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and the University of Massachusetts.
Intellectual and Research Areas
His main areas of work are social theories of modernity, historical and comparative sociology, sociology of religion, Iranian intellectualism, Islam and social change, culture and politics in the Middle East, and the relationship between democracy, tradition, and modernity. In his works, he has particularly addressed the issue of Iranian modernity, intellectualism, political Islam, Ahmad Fardid, Taqi Arani, and the possibility of democracy in contemporary Iran.
