Erin Marie Saltman is a prominent American researcher and analyst in the field of countering extremism, terrorism, and online radicalization. She has served as the former Director of Counter-Extremism Policy at Meta (Facebook) and as Director of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).
Erin Marie Saltman pursued her higher education in international relations and political science, receiving her doctorate from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and UCL. Her early research focused on far-right movements, new nationalism, and youth radicalization processes in Europe.
Before entering the technology industry, Saltman worked as a Senior Researcher at the international think tank and research institute, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), publishing numerous reports on how extremist groups (including ISIS and neo-Nazi groups) recruit. She was subsequently appointed as Meta's Director of Counter-Extremism and Counter-Terrorism Policy for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, where she developed risk assessment strategies and measures to counter the misuse of social networks.
Her research primarily focuses on the balance between "online safety" and "preserving freedom of expression and human rights." As a key expert within international bodies, she plays a significant role in articulating counter-narrative strategies and combating hate speech in cyberspace.
