About this video
Aesthetic criticism is not merely the expression of personal likes and dislikes; it is an effort to understand, describe, and evaluate the experience of beauty and the artwork. Featuring Kaveh Behbahani, this program addresses the question of what aesthetic criticism is and its relationship to philosophy, art, taste, and judgment.
The focus of the discussion is the distinction between personal reaction and considered criticism. In aesthetic criticism, one must be able to speak about the qualities of the work, the audience's experience, form, meaning, emotion, context, and the possibility of rational dialogue about art—without reducing criticism to a dry formula or a matter of mere taste.
The importance of this subject lies in the fact that encountering art and beauty is part of our intellectual and cultural life. Understanding aesthetic criticism can contribute to a more precise reading of artworks, a more considered dialogue about art, and a clearer understanding of the relationship between emotion, thought, and judgment.
This meeting was organized by the Hafez Shiraz Higher Education Institute and is suitable for those interested in the philosophy of art, aesthetics, art criticism, and contemporary philosophy.
