Psychology and evolutionary biology carry lessons for social justice—from the conflicting tendencies of moral hypocrisy and fairness to an evolutionary reading in defense of justice. The literature and cinema of the marginalized, by fostering empathy, are a step toward reducing inequalities and should not be dismissed.

In the views of political thinkers such as Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, there was a close connection between their political opinions and their psychological views on human nature. With the increasing specialization of the sciences in the twentieth century, this link was severed, and political thinkers left the study of human nature to psychology and biology.
In recent decades, with the expansion of empirical approaches in the humanities, the path of the predecessors has been continued in a new direction, and attention has once again been paid to human nature in the study of politics. The difference being that this time, human nature was examined empirically.
In this talk, held on February 20th, World Social Justice Day, in the Didgah group of the New Circle, Hadi Samadi explains what new implications evolutionary psychology and biology have for social justice.
The first part of the talk points to findings that simultaneously demonstrate the existence of two conflicting tendencies in humans: findings based on the existence of moral hypocrisy (which show we preach fairness but do not act fairly) and findings that, in the opposite direction, indicate the existence of fairness, especially in children. Examining the conditions under which each of these two conflicting aspects predominates within us holds instructive lessons for achieving a more just world.
The second part states that, contrary to a more traditional reading that used the theory of evolution to defend increasing inequalities, there is a perspective from biological evolution in defense of a just world.
The final part states that psychological findings show that literature and cinema that deal with the marginalized in society can be an important step toward increasing public empathy to reduce unjust inequalities, and therefore should not be dismissed with the label of "blackwashing."
