Evolutionary Aesthetics: Beauty and Art from an Evolutionary Perspective
What is the relationship between beauty, art, and the evolutionary process? In this conversation, Hadi Samadi discusses evolutionary aesthetics and its implications for ethics and epistemology, examining the problem of reducing beauty and art to biology.
About this video
Evolutionary aesthetics seeks to explain the formation and experience of beauty, art, and human aesthetic preferences by drawing on the theory of evolution. This approach raises important questions about the origin of aesthetic experience and the relationship between human biological traits and our judgments about beauty and art.
In this conversation, Alireza Emtiaz speaks with Hadi Samadi about evolutionary aesthetics, its achievements, and its consequences for other areas of philosophy. One of the focal points of the discussion is the impact of this perspective on ethics and epistemology, and the possibility of using evolutionary explanations to understand certain aspects of human thought and behavior.
A fundamental question in this discussion is whether an evolutionary explanation of beauty and art amounts to reducing them to biology, or whether a distinction can be made between biological explanation and aesthetic value and meaning. This very issue makes evolutionary aesthetics an important subject at the intersection of biology, psychology, and philosophy.
