In Western thought, faith has two meanings: trust in God or knowledge of Him. Thomas Aquinas regarded it as belief in revealed truths and the submission of reason to the will; Martin Luther, by contrast, defined faith not as assent to church doctrine but as heartfelt trust in divine grace and the love of Christ.
