By examining the use of the word 'should' in art criticism, this article demonstrates that many of a critic's prescriptive judgments about films are based not on objective principles but on personal tastes and desires. Drawing on Wittgenstein and a critique of the Kantian notion of the 'transcendental ought,' the author defends the artist's freedom against the seemingly definitive demands of art criticism.
