Abdolhosein Vahhabzade

Abdolhosein Vahhabzade was born on 29 September 1947 in Sabzevar, Iran. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Jondishapur University of Ahvaz and a master's degree in biological sciences from the University of Iowa in the United States. He later began doctoral studies at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, but his PhD studies remained unfinished due to the circumstances following the Cultural Revolution in Iran and the death of his academic supervisor.

For more than four decades, Vahhabzade has taught ecology and environmental sciences at Iranian universities. Alongside his academic teaching, he has played an influential role in translating and writing foundational environmental texts. His works and translations include "Silent Spring", "Design with Nature", "Diversity of Life", "Environmental Ethics", "Ecology", "Evolution", and "Child and Nature".

In Vahhabzade's thought, the environment is not merely a natural or technical subject, but is deeply connected with culture, education, lifestyle, and social relations. Through developing and promoting the idea of nature schools, he sought to transform the relationship between children and nature into an educational and cultural issue, showing the importance of free experiences in nature for children's development and the formation of environmental awareness.

For his scientific, translation, and public education activities, Vahhabzade has received awards such as Iran's National Environment Award, Mehrgan Science Award, Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Science Promotion Award. His intellectual position in Iran is primarily associated with his efforts to connect ecology, education, and cultural responsibility toward nature.
