This video is a lecture by Dr. Sirus Yeganeh on the topic of 'Modern, Modernity, Modernism, and Postmodernism,' held on October 23, 2000, organized by the Cultural and Social Affairs Deputy of the University of Tehran. The subject of the lecture is the differentiation of concepts that are frequently used in philosophical, social, artistic, and cultural discussions but are sometimes understood interchangeably.
The main focus of the discussion is to clarify the relationship between 'modern' as a descriptor for the new, 'modernity' as the historical and social condition of the new world, 'modernism' as intellectual and artistic currents and styles, and 'postmodernism' as a critique of or departure from certain foundations of modernity. This differentiation helps the audience follow discussions related to rationality, progress, tradition, individuality, science, art, and the new society with greater precision.
The importance of this lecture lies in its explanation of one of the most widely used conceptual clusters in the humanities in an educational and analytical language. Understanding the differences between these terms is essential for engaging with topics in contemporary philosophy, sociology, cultural criticism, modern art, and postmodern theories.
This video is suitable for those interested in philosophy, sociology, cultural theory, the history of thought, and the relationship between tradition and modernity.
