Göran Hermerén

Göran Hermerén was born in Sweden in 1938. He was professor of philosophy of science and humanities at Umeå University from 1970 to 1975, and became professor of philosophy at Lund University in 1975. Since 1991, he has also held the chair of medical ethics at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine.

Hermerén has primarily conducted research in the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of art, medical ethics, and neuroethics. His previous works include studies on representation and meaning in the visual arts and aspects of aesthetics. In the short but influential book Art and Artificial Intelligence (Cambridge University Press, 2024), which is part of the "Elements in Bioethics and Neuroethics" series, he addresses the fundamental question, "Can computers create art?"

In this work, Hermerén examines concepts such as authorship, creativity, consciousness, the learning process, and artistic value, arguing that current artificial intelligence systems cannot be considered autonomous artists because they lack human intention, experience, and consciousness. His book is considered one of the rigorous and balanced philosophical analyses of the aesthetic and ethical challenges of art produced by artificial intelligence.
