Qur’anic Exegesis, Islamic Ethics, and Shi'a TeachingsIranianb. 1944
Hossein Ansarian is an Iranian Shi'a cleric, Qur’anic exegete, preacher, and writer, born in Khansar on 8 November 1944. Much of his work is devoted to religious preaching, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic ethics, and the exposition of Shi'a devotional and hadith texts, and he has published numerous works on translation, exegesis, and public religious education.
Hossein Ansarian was born in Khansar on 8 November 1944. His family moved to Tehran during his childhood, where he completed part of his general education and his preliminary seminary studies. He later continued his religious education at the Qom Seminary and attended the classes of teachers including Mohammad Fazel Lankarani, Seyyed Mohammad Mohaghegh Damad, and Mirza Hashem Amoli.
The central focus of Ansarian’s public activity has been religious preaching. From his youth, he delivered religious lectures, and a substantial part of his recorded and written work concerns the Qur’an, hadith, ethics, repentance, supplication, the Ahl al-Bayt, and religious education. The Dar al-Irfan Institute was also established to publish works, lectures, and research related to his activities.
Alongside preaching, Ansarian has produced numerous translations, commentaries, and original works. His well-known publications include translations of the Qur’an, Nahj al-Balagha, and al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya; a translation and adaptation of Mafatih al-Jinan; Sharh Du'a Kumayl; Islamic Mysticism; Land of Lovers; The Family System in Islam; and the series A Survey of Islamic Teachings. Some of these works have been translated into other languages.
A central feature of Ansarian’s thought and expression is his emphasis on linking the Qur’an and the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt with ethics and practical life. His lectures and writings give particular attention to repentance, divine mercy, self-cultivation, love, family, worship, and moral responsibility. His activity belongs primarily to the tradition of religious exegesis, preaching, ethics, and public education in Shi'a teachings rather than to academic research.
Ansarian has also written extensive commentaries on several Shi'a devotional and hadith texts, and in his exegetical works he has sought to connect Qur’anic teachings with ethical and educational concerns. His extensive body of lectures and writings has associated his name, over recent decades, with religious preaching and the public teaching of Shi'a knowledge in Iran.
