Life and Thought
Karl Löwith, 1897–1973, was a German-Jewish philosopher and one of the prominent students of Martin Heidegger. He was born in Munich and grew up in the atmosphere of German philosophy between the two World Wars. With the rise of the Nazis, he was forced to leave Germany due to his Jewish ancestry and spent some time teaching and researching in Italy, Japan, and the United States. After World War II, Löwith returned to Germany and taught philosophy at the University of Heidelberg.
