Life and Thought
Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997) was a British philosopher, historian of ideas, and essayist of Russian-Jewish origin, regarded as one of the leading theorists of liberalism in the twentieth century. He is best known for his distinction between “negative liberty” and “positive liberty” and his defence of “value pluralism” against totalitarian ideologies. His famous essay “Two Concepts of Liberty” is one of the key texts of contemporary political philosophy.
