Reza Koohkan is a contemporary Iranian researcher in the fields of Islamic philosophy, mysticism, and the history of science in the Islamic world. He is a faculty member at the Iranian Institute of Philosophy, and in his writings and scholarly activities, he pays special attention to the intellectual and spiritual traditions of Islamic Iran, Illuminationist philosophy, Muslim mysticism, and the history of alchemy.
Part of his work is dedicated to translating and introducing important works by Islamologists and Iranologists who have written about Iranian-Islamic wisdom and spirituality. Among the works associated with him are the translation of volumes of "Islam in the Land of Iran: Spiritual and Philosophical Perspectives" by Henry Corbin and the translation of "Alchemy and Mysticism in the Land of Islam" by Pierre Lory. Also, the critical edition of Suhrawardi's "The Red Intellect" is one of his well-known works connected to the Illuminationist tradition.
In Koohkan's research, issues such as the relationship between philosophy and mysticism, the place of Iran in the history of Islamic thought, the alchemical tradition and its symbolic and spiritual concepts, and the reading of classical philosophical and mystical texts are prominent. For this reason, he can be counted among the researchers who establish links between the studies of Islamic philosophy, the history of religions, mysticism, and the history of science.
