Natural Theology and the Relationship between Science and ReligionBritish
Rodney D. Holder is an Anglican priest, astrophysicist, and British theologian. He was one of the founders and the former course director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge and has written important works in the fields of natural theology, cosmology, and the relationship between science and faith.
Rodney Dennis Holder read mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and received his doctorate in astrophysics from Christ Church, Oxford. After 14 years working for the UK Ministry of Defence, he returned to Oxford to study theology. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1997, and after several years of parish ministry, he served as course director of the Faraday Institute from its founding until his retirement in 2013.
Holder has published numerous works on the relationship between science and religion, particularly cosmology and natural theology. Among his important books are "Big Bang, Big God" (2013), on the design of the universe and the fine-tuning of physical laws; "The Heavens Declare," on Karl Barth's legacy in natural theology; and "Ramified Natural Theology in Science and Religion" (2020). Drawing on probabilistic arguments and Bayes' theorem, he defends the rationality of the Christian theistic worldview and believes that science and faith are complementary.
