Life and Thought
John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was a prominent British priest, theologian, philosopher, and cardinal of the Victorian era. Initially a leader in the Church of England and the Oxford Movement, he later converted to the Catholic Church, becoming one of the most influential religious thinkers of the nineteenth century. His highly influential works, such as *The Idea of a University* and *An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent*, have played a significant role in the philosophy of higher education and religious epistemology.
