Zaharia Stancu was a Romanian poet, novelist, and journalist of the twentieth century, regarded as one of the important figures of Romanian literature. He is best known for the novel "Barefoot" (Desculț) and his poetry, in which he addressed themes such as poverty, human suffering, freedom, and the historical experiences of Romanian people.
Zaharia Stancu was born in 1902 in the village of Salcia, Romania. He grew up in a rural and modest family, and his early experiences of poverty and the lives of disadvantaged social classes later appeared throughout his literary works. He began his literary career as a poet and gradually became one of Romania’s recognized writers.
Alongside poetry, Stancu was active in journalism and cultural management. He held various positions in Romanian literary institutions and served as president of the Romanian Writers’ Union from 1966 until his death.
His most important fictional work is the novel "Barefoot" (Desculț), published in 1948. The novel realistically portrays Romanian peasants’ lives, poverty, social oppression, and human struggles for survival, and it has been translated into several languages.
Stancu died in Bucharest in 1974. He remains an important figure in twentieth-century Romanian literature and a recognized writer of Eastern European literature.
