The ethics of care refers to a set of approaches in moral philosophy that highlight the role of gender in understanding morality and regard conventional moral philosophy as a masculine philosophy in need of revision. These perspectives are based on several core principles: the centrality of human relationships and attention to the specific conditions of each relationship, the importance of moral feelings and emotions, considering the act of care as a fundamental virtue, and an emphasis on women's experiences and intuitions that have been ignored in patriarchal systems.
In this session, organized by the City of Philosophy Institute of Iran on October 25, 2024, Hossein Bayat and Omid Keshvari explained and elucidated these components. They showed how the ethics of care, by approaching particularism in metaethics, critiques the exclusive focus on rights and justice and places virtues such as compassion, caretaking, and sympathy at the center of attention; virtues that bring human beings closer to one another.
