Hegel and Multiple Modernities; Webinar by Arash Abazari
This webinar examines the relationship between Hegel's thought and the idea of multiple modernities. In this lecture, Arash Abazari explores the possibility of understanding modernity beyond a single European path.
About this video
Modernity is often understood as a single narrative of historical transformation, rationality, the state, and freedom; but the theory of multiple modernities seeks to show that modern experiences in different societies can have various paths and forms. Focusing on Hegel, this webinar examines the relationship between his philosophy of history and social philosophy with this contemporary discussion.
In this program, organized by the Institute for Analytic Philosophy, Arash Abazari addresses questions about Hegel's place in understanding the modern world, the relationship between universality and difference, and the possibility of non-linear readings of modernity. The central issue is whether Hegel's philosophy closes off the path to understanding historical plurality, or whether an opportunity for analyzing different modernities can be derived from within it.
This webinar is significant for those interested in Hegel's philosophy, political philosophy, social theory, and modernity studies; because it raises one of the fundamental questions of contemporary thought: Does the modern world have only a single model, or can we speak of multiple forms of modernization?
