Arvin Sedaghatkish's Essays: “A Micro-Essay on Improving Our Music Criticism”

What paths lie ahead for improving our music criticism? Answering this seemingly simple question requires a careful examination of the contemporary state of music criticism, as well as an understanding of certain knots and difficulties facing music criticism in Iran. For this reason, in 2015, a treatise titled “A Micro-Essay on Improving Our Music Criticism” (in four discourses) addressed this subject and put forward proposals, some of which have been realized in the five-year period since the treatise’s publication, while others still await fulfillment. Reading this essay, accessible through the links below, takes us into an analytical world of the current situation and ultimately sketches an outline of the yet-to-arrive land of a kind of music criticism that has been called “better.”

Arvin Sedaghatkish, critic, music researcher, and composer, was born in 1974. He began his artistic activities in 1987. Arvin Sedaghatkish is among the leading figures in the field of music research, and with the publication of over 200 specialized articles in Persian and English, he has been one of the country’s most prolific music researchers in recent years.

Sedaghatkish is a familiar face in music publications. He is a member of the editorial boards of Farhang va Ahang, Mehregani Quarterly, Naqd-e No, Harmonic Dialogue, and others. His writings can be found in many of the country’s national publications.

Sedaghatkish is also a member of the research department of the Yar Ava Music Group, a co-author of the “Sheida Book of the Year,” and has been a judge for two editions of the Iran Music Websites and Blogs Festival. He appears to be the first person to have taught music criticism in Iran.
