Independent rational thought and the pursuit of wisdom first manifested in the thinking of the pre-Socratic philosophers, laying the foundation for future science and philosophy. A review of these thinkers' worldview and their legacy for later centuries, in a lecture by Reza Yaghoubi.

The Presocratic philosophers hold a special significance in the history of thought. Free human thought and independent rational thinking first manifested in the ideas of these philosophers, and the cornerstone of the glorious intellectual millennia to come was laid in this period. The legacy of the Presocratic philosophers is not only philosophy, but science and the systematic pursuit of knowledge, and the search for wisdom for its own sake, also took shape in this era. In a sense, one could say that Socrates' "I know that I know nothing" was a motto for the endless pursuit of knowledge and a declaration that the Presocratic philosophers had embarked on a path with no conceivable end, and that the illusion of knowledge would become an obstacle to increasing knowledge.
Although a precise and explicit distinction between science, philosophy, and myth had not yet emerged in Presocratic thought, the general outlines of disciplines that would later go their separate ways were delineated. They also inspired Aristotle in distinguishing between the four causes. Aristotle's critique of them was indebted to them more than to Aristotle himself. Each of them highlighted a cause that later enabled Aristotle to organize his system of cause and effect with a fourfold classification. Great philosophers, including Hume, Hegel, and others, were also influenced by their ideas, which are recounted as part of the legacy of the Presocratic philosophers.
What you will hear in this session (organized by the Philosophy Student Association of the University of Tabriz) is an overview of the worldview of some of these philosophers and their intellectual and scientific legacy for the centuries and millennia to come.
