"What is emerging across the world is illiberal democracy."
Fareed Zakaria is an Indian-American journalist, political theorist, and international relations analyst. He is known for his writings and programs on global politics, international order, liberal democracy, and America's place in the world. Books such as "The Future of Freedom" and "The Post-American World" are among his important works for understanding contemporary political developments.
Fareed Rafiq Zakaria was born in 1964 in Bombay, India, and after studying in India, continued his university education in the United States. He studied at Yale University and then received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. Zakaria later worked as an editor, writer, and analyst for media outlets such as Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, Time, and CNN.
Zakaria's intellectual significance lies above all in his analyses of the relationship between democracy, freedom, and political order. In his book "The Future of Freedom," he distinguishes between electoral democracy and constitutional liberalism, warning that elections, if not accompanied by the rule of law, individual rights, and the limitation of power, can lead to "illiberal democracy."
In "The Post-American World," Zakaria speaks of the transformation of the global balance of power; not necessarily the complete decline of America, but rather the "rise of the rest"—that is, the growth of emerging economic and political powers and the world becoming more multipolar. His works and analyses lie at the intersection of intellectual journalism, political science, and public policy, and have been influential in understanding contemporary global politics.
