The Metaphysics of Violence; A Conversation with Akbar Jabbari
This video features a conversation between Sabereh Etebar and Akbar Jabbari on 'The Metaphysics of Violence.' The discussion seeks to examine violence not only at the level of social behavior, but also in the deeper layers of thought, ontology, and human understanding of the world.
About this video
Violence is usually reduced to overt political or social actions; but the more important philosophical question is what images of the human being, truth, power, and the Other can lay the groundwork for violence. In this conversation, Sabereh Etebar and Akbar Jabbari, under the title 'The Metaphysics of Violence,' address these very fundamental layers.
The focus of the discussion is the relationship between violence and our view of existence, the human being, and the Other. When truth is reduced to the property of an individual or group, or the Other is considered merely an obstacle to our will and desire, violence can take on a theoretical and intellectual form before manifesting in behavior.
The importance of this conversation lies in the fact that it takes the understanding of violence beyond the level of individual ethics and everyday politics, transforming it into a philosophical question. This video is suitable for audiences interested in philosophy, ethics, religious studies, and the critique of the intellectual roots of violence.
