Studying the Sasanian World; A Conversation with Touraj Daryaee
This video is a conversation with Touraj Daryaee about studying the Sasanian world. The discussion covers history, culture, religion, politics, and the place of the Sasanian Empire in understanding ancient Iran.
About this video
The Sasanian world is one of the most important and influential periods in the history of ancient Iran; a period in which politics, religion, language, urban planning, economy, and Iran's relations with the surrounding world took on a distinctive form. In this conversation, Touraj Daryaee, Professor of History and the Ancient World, discusses the importance of studying this period.
The focus of the discussion is understanding the Sasanian Empire not just as a political entity, but as a historical and cultural world. Examining the power structure, the role of the Zoroastrian religion, relations between Iran and Rome, Pahlavi languages and texts, and the cultural heritage of the Sasanians can provide a more precise understanding of pre-Islamic Iranian history.
The significance of this conversation lies in its ability to move the study of the Sasanian world beyond simple and clichéd narratives, examining it in connection with historical research, Iranian studies, and the recognition of Iran's cultural continuities. This video is suitable for those interested in the history of Iran, ancient Iran, and Sasanian studies.
