A lecture series on the sociology of war by Mohsen Hesam Mazaheri, held in 4 sessions beginning April 11, 2016, at the Scientific Association of Sociology of the University of Tehran, focusing on the sociology of the Iran-Iraq War.

Organizers' Note:

The eight-year Iran-Iraq War (September 1980 to August 1988) is considered one of the longest and most significant wars of the twentieth century. Although nearly two decades have passed since its end, due to the depth and persistence of its consequences, it still lives on in Iranian society and remains a living issue in public opinion. Nevertheless, it is surprising and regrettable that our academic social sciences have not adequately addressed this subject and have largely neglected it. This is while, in the words of Alireza Kamari—one of the renowned researchers in this field—"war is the great laboratory of the humanities," and thousands of questions and topics under this subject have been or can be raised that the social sciences can answer. In other words, the richness of social studies of war is both beneficial and essential for this subject and for the social sciences. It is hoped that this short course can pave the way for establishing a chair in the sociology of the Iran-Iraq War in the country's academic centers.
