By repeating the claim that the Torah and the Gospels have been distorted, the education system has deprived us of reading them. Even if we do not regard these books as divine revelation, they are still worth studying as tradition; reading them leads to certainty about the messages of religions and to reflection on religious beliefs.

During the break between classes and the start of exams in Tir of this year, I had the good fortune to read the Bible. This reading brought me many pleasant moments and yielded valuable insights. These insights prompted me to write a short piece on our misguided approach to the sacred texts of Judaism and Christianity.
In our religious education system, a great injustice has been done to all of us. That injustice is the discrediting of the Torah and the Bible in our eyes.
We Iranians, from the moment we entered the educational system in elementary school, have read and heard in various ways that the Torah and the Bible have been distorted. This statement was repeated to us so often that it led us to conclude that there is probably no good in these two books, that they are surely filled with distortions and human writings, and that there is no need to read them. This indoctrinated thought left us with no desire or inclination to study these books.
My point in this short note is not to promote Christianity or Judaism, nor even to encourage an exhaustive study of these holy books. Nor is my point that these books have not been distorted and are, like the Quran, revelation sent down from heaven. For, firstly, at the very least, Christians themselves do not hold such a belief and accept that the Bible consists of writings by the Apostles and others. Secondly, the Quran explicitly and repeatedly emphasizes that distortions have occurred in the Torah and the Bible. (Of course, in the Quran, we repeatedly see it arguing with Jews and Christians that this Quran confirms what is in your books. This means it considers parts of these books to be correct and true.) Thirdly, even if we do not consider the Bible and the Torah to be revelation and regard them as the tradition transmitted from Christ and Moses, in that case, the Bible and the Torah are at least like our own tradition and hadiths. Now, do we, under the pretext that there is a possibility of distortion in hadiths, deprive ourselves of reading and contemplating our tradition and narrations?
My entire point is that I do not think any thoughtful person or researcher on this planet could be found who believes that all the contents of the Holy Book (Old and New Testaments) are distorted and false. Since this is the case, and we all accept that at least part of these books is correct and reliable, why should we see the glass as half empty and focus on the disputed and distorted parts, thereby depriving ourselves of the blessings of these holy books?
The most minimal and superficial benefit that reading the Bible and the Torah has for any reader is that it reduces their doubts about the authenticity and truth of the core claim and message of religions (God, the Resurrection, and other main propositions). That is, when one sees how three books, separated by considerable time intervals and belonging to different cultures, share so much in common, they become more certain of the truth of these shared messages. Furthermore, seeing these commonalities prompts them to reflect again on the propositions of their own religion. It causes them to reconsider propositions they previously passed by easily before reading other holy books, and to see them as containing messages that are not understood from their outward appearance.
In closing, I present passages from various parts of the Bible that were noteworthy to me personally, passages that demonstrate the sacredness of this book:
Gospel of Matthew:
What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?
I desire mercy, not sacrifice. In my view, Christ wants to say that in my teachings, I make the utmost effort to attract the maximum number and not to cause sedition, misguidance, and the sacrifice of people.
The disciples asked Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Jesus called a little child and said, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And in the Gospel of Mark it is written that when people were bringing children to Christ to receive a blessing, the disciples rebuked them. Jesus was indignant and said to them: Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. 10:13
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 19:23
In the world to come, many who are first will be last, and the last first.
If you have faith, whatever you ask for in prayer, you will receive, and if you say to a mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.
They asked him, “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law of Moses and the writings of the prophets hang on these two commandments.” (I think perhaps by “neighbor” he means the absolute other.)
Gospel of Mark:
A point I must note about the Gospels of Mark and Luke is that Mark is the shortest Gospel, and most of its content concerns the miracles of Christ. The Gospel of Matthew contains almost all the material of Mark and Luke, so if one reads Matthew, there is no need to read Mark. Of course, in a few instances it has material not found in Matthew.
Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. 3:35
Christ did not speak to the people except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples.
When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
Gospel of Luke:
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
In the home of the two sisters, Martha and Mary, and in response to Martha’s complaint that Mary has sat beside you and does not help me serve: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Addressing the scholars of the Pharisees: Woe to you experts in the law, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.
Store up your treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
None of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your family and all your possessions.
No servant can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money.
For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Gospel of John:
No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed and shamed.
Addressing those who had believed in him: If you hold to my teaching, you are truly my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.
Several times in different places, addressing the disciples: My command to you is that you love one another.
Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chapter 13, Verse 8:
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, Chapter 4, Verse 7:
For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
The First Letter of John
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer.
He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.
God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
The Letter of James:
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.
Know this, my beloved brethren: let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
If anyone thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart, and his religion is vain.
Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.
