Emmanuel Levinas critiques Western philosophy for reducing the 'Other' to the 'Self' and regards ethics as 'first philosophy'. For him, the 'I' is constituted in responsibility toward the other, and the relation to God passes through human beings.

My vagabond heart has gone to the twists of his tresses,
From that long journey of its own, it has no intention of returning home.
(Hafez)
One of the preoccupations of many modern philosophers is the discussion of the “Other” and the relationship with it. This concern is more prevalent among continental philosophers. Perhaps because they speak more of tangible and conventional matters than analytic philosophers, and are less engaged in academic games and university debates. In the writings that follow, we will briefly examine the discussion of the “Other” in the works of philosophers such as Levinas, Buber, Derrida, and Marion.
Levinas is a critic of many philosophical currents. In his view, the hallmark of philosophy has always been its inability to think of the other and the “Other,” reducing everything to the “self.” This is the tragic story of Western philosophy; from Parmenides, who reduced all multiplicities to an all-encompassing unity, to the “I” of Kant and Hegel, which left no room for others and considered everything to be born of and parasitic upon the “I.”
Levinas likens the adventure of philosophy to the story of Ulysses[1] in Greek mythology, who, after many journeys and enduring various perils and mishaps, finally returns to that familiar land (Ithaca[2]).
In contrast to Ulysses, he praises Abraham (pbuh); one who leaves his homeland forever and sets out on a path that leads him to an “other” land; a land that bears no trace of familiarity.
But philosophy has always been like Ulysses, not Abraham. Philosophy has always sought to return to the familiar land, and Levinas strives to take philosophy to a place that is elsewhere, and to make it ready and receptive to an encounter with what it has always repressed.
Levinas distinguishes between the “Same” and the “Other.” A distinction that seems simple but has a vital aspect. The Same means that which I understand; that which I want; that which is familiar to me. The “Same” is easily categorized and packaged and swallowed into oneself, but the other and the Other are never so.
The “Other” does not fit into the categories constructed by my mind. The Other is not a photocopy of me. The Other does not emerge from within my thoughts and perceptions. The Other has its own dignity and independence. The Other is not my shadow, nor is it my construct. The Other is the Other.
All tyrants and totalitarians reduce the Other to the “Same.” Totalitarianism[3] means the denial and repression of the otherness of the Other; it means, before the Other even opens their mouth to speak, packaging and judging them based on one's own mental categories. Domination, exploitation, and tyranny all have their roots in this repression of the Other.
“The face of the Other is a trace of God.”
(Levinas)
For Levinas, face-to-face relations with the Other become the foundation of ethics, and this ethics is so important to Levinas that he considers it not a branch of philosophy but the very basis of philosophy. He calls ethics “first philosophy[4].” (First philosophy was a term used by the ancients to refer to the highest part of philosophy.)
For Levinas, ethics is more important than anything else. What Levinas means is a tangible ethics arising from face-to-face relations. Such an ethics is the origin and source of everything; in the sense that our effort to understand the world is for the sake of things that matter to us, and what matters to us more and before anything else are the tangible, flesh-and-blood other human beings. In fact, the foundation and meaning of all our quests and researches in philosophy, science, etc., are based on tangible, face-to-face relations with others and stem from the sense of responsibility we have towards them.
