Issue 154: The Wisdom of Life

The field of comparative philosophy in Iran, drawing on its historical experiences such as the sages like Farabi and Sheikh al-Ishraq in the encounter of Islamic culture with the Greek tradition and Khosravani wisdom, and with the prominence of the encounter with the West in the philosophical tradition of Tehran and Qom and the discussions of figures like Count de Gobineau, Henry Corbin, and Toshihiko Izutsu, as well as the efforts of the Neo-Sadrian movement, has found a home in the philosophy department and has, for some time now, entered academic life. Now, however, it requires a renewed reflection on its future path to lead to untrodden ways and open possibilities for emerging from ambiguity, or at least the sluggishness of the educational and research process in the field of comparative philosophy. The central focus and main concern of the special issue, number one hundred and fifty-four, of the Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat Quarterly, is comparative philosophy in contemporary Iran. In this regard, two directions can be observed. One is the path already taken in the birth and formation of comparative philosophy within the Iranian-Islamic tradition and an examination of the disagreement over whether comparative philosophy is a novel phenomenon in the contemporary tradition or has older roots in the classical philosophical tradition as well; and the other is the path ahead and the open horizons before it, so that while diagnosing the existing situation, a way may also be paved for the desired state.
