Alexis de Tocqueville was a nineteenth-century French historian, political thinker, and statesman who became one of the most influential analysts of democracy, liberty, and modern society, especially through his book Democracy in America. He examined the relationship between social equality, political freedom, civic institutions, and the dangers of the tyranny of the majority.
