Persian Literature and Shahnameh StudiesIranian
Ghadam-Ali Sarami is a poet, writer, professor of Persian literature, and a prominent Shahnameh researcher. He is known for his studies on Ferdowsi, Rumi, Hafez, Saadi, and children's and young adult literature, and his book From the Color of the Flower to the Suffering of the Thorn is one of his important works in Shahnameh studies.
Ghadam-Ali Sarami was born on January 28, 1944, in Ramhormoz. He pursued his university education in Persian language and literature at the University of Tehran, continuing in the same field up to the doctoral level. Sarami taught Persian literature at universities for many years, while simultaneously engaging in poetry, fiction, literary criticism, and research on classical Persian texts.
His main area of work is Persian literature, particularly Shahnameh studies. In his works, Sarami has endeavored to pay attention to the narrative structure, aesthetics, mythological world, and cultural layers of the Shahnameh, introducing Ferdowsi not merely as the poet of a national epic, but as a profound narrator of the historical and moral experience of Iranians.
His most important scholarly work is From the Color of the Flower to the Suffering of the Thorn: A Morphology of the Stories of the Shahnameh; a detailed book on the structure and formation of the Shahnameh's stories, which was recognized as worthy of appreciation at the Islamic Republic of Iran's Book of the Year Awards. He has also published works in the fields of Rumi studies, Hafez studies, Saadi studies, contemporary poetry, and children's and young adult literature.
Sarami is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ferdowsi Foundation and was named among the top Shahnameh researchers in the first edition of the Professor Aghabozorg Research Prize in 2011. His importance for the Sedanet audience lies in linking classical Persian literature with today's cultural, ethical, and identity questions; especially through a fresh and structured reading of the Shahnameh.
