Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German poet, writer, playwright, thinker, and researcher who is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of European literature and culture. He was born on 28 August 1749 in Frankfurt, Germany, into a prosperous family. Goethe studied law, but from an early age he became interested in literature, philosophy, art, and the natural sciences, eventually becoming one of the central figures of German intellectual life.

Goethe gained widespread fame with the publication of the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774, a work that had a profound influence on European literature and is considered one of the major works of the Sturm und Drang movement. He later worked at the court of Weimar, where he played important roles in literary, cultural, and administrative affairs.

Goethe’s most important work is the epic drama Faust, the first part of which was published in 1808 and the second part of which appeared after his death. By addressing themes such as knowledge, human desire, experience, morality, and the search for meaning, this work became one of the foundational works of philosophical literature.

Beyond literature, Goethe also worked in fields such as color theory, natural sciences, aesthetics, and cultural reflection. His views on nature, humanity, and individual development influenced many later thinkers, including the Romantics and some German philosophers. His thought often emphasized the unity of art, nature, and human experience.
