Who Was Ernst Nolte? A Conversation with Mehdi Tadayoni
This conversation with Mehdi Tadayoni explores the life, thought, and place of Ernst Nolte in historiography and political philosophy. The focus is on Nolte's relationship with fascism, Nazism, communism, and his famous controversy with Jürgen Habermas.
About this video
This video is a conversation between Bonubook and Mehdi Tadayoni about Ernst Nolte, the German historian and thinker. Nolte was one of the controversial figures of twentieth-century historiography and is best known for his research on fascism, Nazism, Bolshevism, and the relationship between totalitarian ideologies.
The main focus of the conversation is introducing Nolte's place in the history of political thought and European historiography. Nolte sought to understand fascism within the broader horizon of the crises of modernity, revolution, political violence, and the ideological reactions of the twentieth century. This very approach made his works controversial and provoked serious criticism.
A significant part of Nolte's importance stems from his controversy with Jürgen Habermas and the famous 'Historians' Dispute' in Germany. This dispute was not only about the interpretation of Germany's past, but also about historical responsibility, collective memory, the relationship between Nazism and communism, and the limits of comparison in historiography.
This conversation is suitable for those interested in the history of political thought, fascism, totalitarianism, the philosophy of history, German history, Jürgen Habermas, and discussions related to historical memory and political violence.
