About this video
In the sixty-eighth session of the Goftar va Andisheh (Discourse and Thought) series, Arash Mousavi, translator of the book A Brief History of Equality by Thomas Piketty, introduced and reviewed this work. Piketty, who previously gained global renown with Capital in the Twenty-First Century and Capital and Ideology, presents in this concise and readable book a summary of his long-standing research on inequality.
The book provides a comparative history of class, gender, racial, and economic inequalities, while also offering a narrative of long-term progress toward greater equality. Piketty shows that this movement was neither linear nor automatic, but rather the result of social struggles, revolutions, wars, the expansion of the welfare state, progressive taxation, and wealth redistribution. From the eras of slavery and colonialism to the twentieth century and today's challenges, he charts the tumultuous path of equality and emphasizes the necessity of continuing this struggle in the twenty-first century.
The importance of this discussion lies in the fact that Piketty, drawing on extensive historical data, provides a documented response to the prevailing pessimism about inequality and recalls the practical tools for advancing equality. Arash Mousavi's remarks, as the translator, open a precise and illuminating window onto the book's content and its central message.
