Religious traditions are a fitting vessel for spirituality, and changing one's religion is as perilous as a writer changing languages. Salvation lies in diving deep and retrieving pearls of meaning within one's own religious tradition, not in abandoning it; for the measure is the depth of one's religiosity, not the name of the religion.

It seems to me that religious and denominational traditions are more suitable beds for the tree of spirituality to take root. Historical experience shows that the soil of religions and denominations has been more fertile for the flourishing of mystical experiences and spiritual journeys.
Apparently, religions and denominations have been good supports for human beings in their quest for perfection and meaning, and the most prominent spiritual sages and visionary mystics have flourished from within religious traditions.
Salvation depends on diving deep and finding the pearls of meaning and virtue from the heart of our own religious tradition. There is no need to renounce religious traditions, nor to abandon one and adopt another. Changing one's religion or denomination is not only unnecessary but, in the view of many, harmful.
Simone Weil, the Christian theologian and mystic, said:
"Personally, I would never give even a sixpence for missionary activities. In my view, changing religion is as dangerous for a person as changing language is for a writer. It may bring success; but it can also have disastrous consequences."(1)
Mahatma Gandhi also said:
"I have no belief in those who speak to others about their religion and proselytize, especially when their intention is to convert them to their own faith. Religion and belief are not in words but in deeds, and in that case, each person's actions will be the agent of propagation."(2)
Gandhi says:
"Suppose a Christian comes to me and says that under the influence of studying the Bhagavad Gita, he wants to become a Hindu. I would tell him: 'No, what the Gita offers you, the Bible also gives you. You just haven't tried to derive it from the Bible. It is better to strive in this path and be a good and true Christian.'"(3)
It is enough for a religious person to be devoted to truth, ethics, and beauty, to create their desired lost object from the substance of their own religious tradition, and with the very fibers at their disposal, weave the rarest and most precious fabric.
Gandhi says: "If someone reaches the truth and heart of their own religion, they have also reached the truth and heart of other religions."(4)
Simone Weil says:
"Whenever a person with a pure heart has called upon Osiris, Dionysus, Krishna, Buddha, and so on, the Son of God has answered their prayer by sending the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit has taken possession of their soul. Not by prompting them to renounce their religious tradition, but by granting them a light—and in the best cases, a full and complete light—within the heart of that very tradition."(5)
"All pure-hearted believers are anonymous Christians. Therefore, religious proselytizing to change the religion of others is futile."(6)
It seems that every religion and creed possesses a degree of wisdom and piety such that one can always undertake reform and reconstruction within its bounds. Those concerned with rationality and ethics can, by utilizing the capacities of each religion and denomination, strive to reconcile their religious teachings with new findings, consensual ethical intuitions, and the requirements of rationality. The course of evolution in religions and denominations shows that such a capacity has existed, and believers have been able to align their religious understanding in a reasonable manner with the demands of social change.
Although the attempt at creative updating of religious thought and empowering ancient traditions for survival in new realms may face numerous theoretical and practical difficulties and obstacles, and the religious individual might imagine they are paying heavy costs to reconcile religiosity with reason and ethics, it seems better than rootlessness and losing a time-tested framework for spiritual transcendence and a more desirable life.
In the history of all religions and denominations, we witness a relatively large number of sages who were both among the wise of their time and renowned and inspiring in virtue and ethics; and this itself can be a sign of the dynamism and rich capabilities of religious and denominational traditions.
Religious currents and organizations would do better, instead of rejecting and criticizing other denominations and religions—which yields nothing but the intensification of pessimism and the reproduction of violence and hatred—to help their co-religionists harvest more pearls from the heart of their own faith.
The reality is that adherents of a particular faith often cannot judge the beliefs and rites of another faith in a sympathetic and optimistic manner. Usually, every religious person interprets and re-reads their own religious system optimistically, seeking to present an interpretation that is as rational as possible; but when it comes to another religion or denomination, they adopt a stance that is unsympathetic, viewed from the outside, and without any effort to resolve the inconsistencies or apparent irrationalities of that religion or denomination.
Simone Weil says:
“The reason for not understanding that various authentic and genuine religions are different reflections of one truth and, probably, of equal value, is that each of us experiences only one of these traditions and sees the others from the outside, whereas a religion can only be known from within.”(7)
From the perspective of mystics, it is not the type of a person’s religion or denomination that is the indicator of their wisdom and salvation, but rather the manner of their religiosity and the depth of their religious practice that is decisive. People have no superiority over one another based on the type of religion or denomination they hold, which is often a product of environmental and involuntary circumstances. What brings elevation of status and nobility of spirit is better and deeper diving, and the acquisition of more precious pearls from the heart of religions and denominations. The criterion is the creative deep-diving of the religious individual. To the extent that a religious person passes through the shell of appearances and dogmas and approaches the core of piety and purity of soul, they are a better religious person. What does the Christian Meister Eckhart, in the perfection, knowledge, and virtue he attained within the Christian tradition, lack compared to Mowlana Jalal al-Din, who flourished at the table of the Quran and Islamic tradition?
Mystics tell us that anyone who possesses a pure disposition, a truth-seeking nature, and a longing for spirituality, in whatever religious tradition and denomination they may be, can attain transcendence and salvation. Changing one’s religion or denomination in pursuit of a supposedly superior truth and spirituality indicates that the individual was unable to actively and creatively excavate and delve deeply within their own religious tradition. Moreover, it seems unlikely that someone who did not find their spiritual quest fulfilled in their former religious tradition could find it in a new one. Hence, it appears that those who pay more attention to the theological and doctrinal dimensions of religion than to its mystical and spiritual dimensions are the ones willing to abandon or change their religion or denomination.
Ibn al-Jawzi mentions the following anecdote, albeit for the purpose of criticism and refutation:
“A Jew came to Abu Sa'id Abu'l-Khayr and said: ‘I wish to become a Muslim at your hands.’ Abu Sa'id asked the Jew: ‘Do you truly wish to become a Muslim?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ Abu Sa'id said: ‘Do you renounce your wealth and your life? This, in my view, is Islam.’ The Jew said: ‘Yes.’ Abu Sa'id said: ‘Since this is the case, take him to such-and-such a sheikh, so that he may teach him the la-la-y of the hypocrites (meaning la ilaha illa Allah).’”(8)
It is also narrated about Mowlana:
“One day, a Roman architect was building a stove in the house of the Master (Mowlana). The companions, in jest, said to him: ‘Why do you not become a Muslim, for the best of religions is the religion of Islam?’ He said: ‘For nearly fifty years I have been in the religion of Jesus; I fear Him and would be ashamed to abandon His religion.’ Suddenly, His Holiness Mowlana entered and declared: ‘The secret of faith is fear. Whoever fears God, even if he is a tarsa [Christian], is with religion, not without religion.’”(9)
Ayn al-Qudat Hamadani also says:
“If a religion brings a person to God, that religion is Islam; and if it grants no awareness to the seeker, in the sight of God Almighty that religion is worse than unbelief. For the wayfarers, Islam is that which brings a person to God, and unbelief is that which causes the seeker an impediment or shortcoming so that they are held back from the Beloved... O dear one! Whatever brings a person to God is Islam, and whatever holds a person back from the path of God is unbelief.”(10)
