A series of sessions on the article “A Modern Defence of Religious Authority”
Modern autonomy and the thought of Mostafa Malekian deem religious dogmatism irrational. In a series of sessions, Omid Kashmiri explicates Linda Zagzebski's article, which considers the acceptance of religious authority a requirement of rationality.
One of the reasonable and acceptable components in the modern world is the emphasis on rationalism and the preservation of individual autonomy. This characteristic considers the rejection of any form of dogmatism and authority as one of the conditions of rationality.
According to this principle, a reasonable person (and one who adheres to the ethics of belief) is someone who, in their beliefs (especially moral and religious beliefs), must act entirely spontaneously and based on their own reasoning and opinion, not on the sayings of others. To the extent that, according to the famous (and admittedly crude) version of this principle, justifying a claim based on the sayings of others (especially a religious and/or moral claim) is itself a kind of fallacy, called the appeal to authority fallacy.
Some Iranian intellectuals, such as Mostafa Malekian, also defend the illegitimacy of dogmatism—especially in the realm of religious beliefs—and for this reason, consider religious beliefs that are based on authority to be unreasonable. [1]
Linda Zagzebski, the renowned American philosopher of religion, ethics, and epistemology, is of the view that the strict version of autonomy lacks sufficient robustness, and the complete acceptance of this form of autonomy is itself contrary to rationality. She attempts to present a version of appealing to authority that is not only not incompatible with autonomy but is one of its requirements. [2]
In a series of sessions titled "On Religious Authority," Omid Keshmiri endeavors, while reporting on the article "A Modern Defense of Religious Authority" by Linda Zagzebski, to explicate it. [3]
In the final session of this series, Mostafa Malekian's view on the illegitimacy of appealing to authority/dogmatism will be analyzed and examined on a case-by-case basis.
